The missus got me one for my birthday last week and I installed it and started poking around over the weekend.  I signed up for X-Box live and have the following games:

Fifa 12  (football)
Call of Duty MW3 (shoot em up)
Skyrim (Single player fantasy RPG)

I've not had a console since the first Playstation in the Mid-90s and things seem to have really moved on since then.  I have Kinect with the X-Box too and the GUI kind of feels like Minority Report with (Tom Cruise).  Pretty cool.

I also signed up for Sky which means I get the movies and sports packages on her account (which I pay for).

All in all pretty happy.  Anyone else play these games or others?  PM me for my Xbox ID.

Good for you Embarrassed I don't like consoles due I don't have any interest over that button mashing console games. My favorite games mostly produced by Paradox Interactive. Their games a lot of detailed with a lot of cultural referances and nice classical music. An example from their games, Hearts of Iron III (WWII grand strategy):

When game is opening Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries playing Cool Another one, when you choose Götterdammerung scenario (1944) and Soviet Union, "Rise My Comrades" playing on background:

And you will be in charge millions of Soviet soldiers marching to Berlin. Or pick Germany, drive Allies in Normandy and Italy to sea and try to hold Soviet hordes (which is pretty hard at that point).

I have a PS3.

My current games are:
Call of Duty 4 MW,
Oblivion (the elder scroll IV) which is the older version of Skyrim.
How is Skyrim. I've heard a lot about its graphic. (geraphicesh vaghean balas ya faghat tablighesh intore?)

I played CoD4 and I heard of Oblivion. I suggest Fallout: New Vegas, released by Bethesda Softwares (who released Oblivion and Elder Scrolls)...

Video games are best art of 21th century. Hundreds of people working for 18 months average to produce a game. It's far more complex than making a movie and even far more profitable. But mid-age people who referring even computers and cell phones as "technology", having a hard time to understand this Approve In that case I can call a spoon as technology or a stone wheel Tongue

Skyrim is good.  I mean it needs a lot of time to get into these kind of games and it is kind of eery playing it by yourself.  On the graphics, I couldn't really tell you because my tele does not really support 60hz and it needs 60hz setting for the game to load but when I set it the graphics go blurred like a poor VHS tape.

Do you mean that we are being distracted while the corporations pick our pockets from under our nose?  Would that if we did not play computer games we would take to the streets and demand our dignity and country back?

I don't like button mashing either and from my experience over the last few days consoles have moved on from that.  I still play real time strategy game Starcraft 2 on the PC too.  Nothing beats that online, pitting your wits against an opposition team.  It parallels mentally with chess.  Or paper scissors rock.

I've got a PS3. In a way Drg is hitting on something, there is an growing addiction problem as game reward systems are increasingly complex and refined as the design generations build on each other, much more so than most conventional forms of light entertainment. In fact ****some**** clinicians actually recommend immersive and fast paced games to people with anxiety problems as it completely overrules normal thought processes. Ask anyone who's tried to talk to their friend or family member while they play MW2 or similar, for example.

In general I see video games as another emerging risk factor for vulnerable and predisposed people, but they aren't the purveyors of species-wide cognitive decline as some have suggested.

The game is very eerie sometimes, the main musical score has a haunting edge that makes me feel uneasy. A lonely game as well, but I'm enjoying it all the same.

I was scoffing at the suggestion that it is some concerted conspiracy.  I think it is just a natural progression that has come from ever improving technology and consumer demand for ever more immersive gaming experiences.  That people with mental problems are predisposed to gaming as a form of escapism I think is irrefutable.

I hated the dungeon quest from riverwood with the revenants .  Had to turn off the damned music.  On a lighter note, I coshed one of the villagers by accident and had the whole damn place turn against me and eventually lynch me, couldn't get it to stop so had to restart the game.  Also I got busted thieving a bit too much and someone took out a contract on me and I had three annoying (and racist) hired thugs to contend with.

What race did you pick?  I picked wood elf.  But kind of wish I went for Breton or high elf now as I am getting into using combat magic a bit.

I've got an xbox but its broken at the moment, something about the ethernet port being damaged and it wont start up with that being broken. I don't really have the spare cash to replace it at the moment but I've still got my PC so its not too much of an issue for me.

Zagros, pick a Nord, Imperial, or the green savages with fangs for good combat.
Nords are powerful but slow, they are good for fighting with claymore or big axe.
Imperials are weaker than Nord, but they are good with all weapons.
Orcs can fight like savages, so a sword is the best weapon for them. They can go berserk.
When you are defining your character choose a combination of knight and mage because you can use both skills. Use destruction spells and weapon like sword to level up your skills. They will help you the most in game.

You are making those recommendations base don Oblivion harburs?  because in Skyrim the races aren't so restricted where if you pick an Orc for battle mage then you have a big disadvantage.

Yes. In oblivion you can make your own class as well. I've seen Skyrim trails and it seems closely similar to Oblivion.

In the reviews it claims that character building is very different to Oblivion.  For example, you are not too restricted by the choices you make at the start.

Everyone starts with 100 magicka, health and stamina, regardless of what race you start with. When you level up you get a choice of boosting one of the three above by ten points, so basically every race has a level platform stats wise to begin with. Unlike ESIV, major and minor classes based on pre-game choices do not determine starting ability, rather each race's individual characteristics determine the skill point at which the player begins through the disciplines. I picked a Breton for example, so had a 'major power' of 50% shield once per day, I was also weighted with better magicka and magic resistance than other races. If you pick a wood elf for example you start stronger at archery and have better sneak and pickpocket than a Breton and others, High Elf best magicka but weakness to magic etc.

What makes magic harder for a wood elf is that the automatic race based 50+ magicka boost a Breton gets can't really be fully compensated for by leveling, which is why skills attribute pre-game boosts (archery, one-handed, destruction) are less useful than stats attribute pre-game boosts (+50 magicka) over the long run.

In a way the race system is more limited in Skyrim than ESIV as you rely completely on predetermined racial characteristics for character and gameplay differences, whereas in the older game you could create a racially/stats based paradoxical character if you wanted to, like choose a weak wood elf and make all his heavy armour, 'tank' attributes stronger, for example.

It's another example of game streamlining towards the middle, take out the fiddly bits and put a cosmetic veneer on player choices, with a few nuances for balance. Like most media I suppose..

I see, not too keen on stealing and pickpocketing just yet, so I might restart as a breton or high elf.

In all honesty I have stuck with my PC, as I only ever have to upgrade the video card from time to time if I want to play games.

I really enjoyed Oblivion years ago when I was chronically ill, as it provided a nice escape from the daily experience of pain and malaise. So much so that I became something of an expert at it, building the most powerful character possible.

And now Skyrim is out. I held out 6 days after the release before I folded and bought the game. 5 and a half years in the making, and the only way to describe it is 'epic'. A lot of the problems in Oblivion seem to have been ironed out - like there only being 12 voice actors in a world with a thousand characters, or all of the dungeons and ruins looking practically the same, and the many many bugs.

I normally play the High Elf in both games. They are taller, in Oblivion better looking (though in Skyrim they look somewhat demonic), and the most magically gifted. Plus I am totally down with their entirely justified haughtiness and sense of intellectual superiority. And in Skyrim, much to my pleasure, I have learned that they have somewhat recovered their position as the dominant racial group in Tamriel (which is where they belong).

Anyhow, I created a male Altmer mage, got bored and then created an amoral, grasping female Altmer thief. We are having a riot of a time committing robberies, burglaries, advancing in the thieves guild and happily becoming Tamriel's Croessus while the province of Skyrim is too distracted by Dragons, religion and rebellions to take any notice of our larcenous ways.

While not natural thieves or archers, I have trained my Altmer character for it specifically and their larger magic pool provides more power for all of the spells which naturally supplement thievery.

Awesome. You have sold me on the thievery thing.  Since I have already started with a wood elf  I think i will continue on that track.

I have a PC too, but the screen's too small and the TV I have (which belongs to the landlord, and there isn't enough space for me to buy my own for starters and not sure I want to spend another 800 quid soley for gaming) has pretty much every port broken except RYW so can't hook it up- I was addicted to WoW for a year then quit it because it was taking over my life.

I tried CoD online multiplayer last night and had my ass handed to me repeatedly, as I said my sh*t TV doesn't support 60hz so the graphics are poor, so I get taken out usually before I can make out that the wirey blob in front of me is an enemy rather than tumble weed.  And to compound the issue I find the aim control to be very clumsy (or maybe I am as the kill replays show no such issues for my assailants) so even if I do see the enemy first I often hit everything except them which then gives them ample time to just turn around and take me out with one or two shots.
