Astronomy magazine (Sept 2015) has an article on the "weirdest star."
It was long hypothesized that there could be combination of a neutron star inside a red giant.
These are called Thorne-Zytkow Objects, and they think they may have found one, and also
the remains of one.  These happen when you have a binary star system, and one star at the end
of its life becomes a neutron star, with an unstable orbit around its smaller, but still quite massive
companion.  In its unstable orbit, it falls into its companion, hence becoming a TZO.
Because exotic heavy elements are probably created in a TZO, the spectral analysis
should be different for them than for an ordinary red giant.
Good stuff, Maynard!
