Britain is deep in depression under a Labour government. Labour ministers join Conservative politicians in demanding cuts in government spending to maintain the gold standard. The Labour prime minister Ramsay McDonald forms a government of national unity with the previous (Conservative) prime minister, Stanley Baldwin, returning as deputy. The Liberal party split, with Lloyd George keeping a few members out of the coalition. The Labour party also splits, though immediately most of the members stay out of the government. At the general election shortly after, the 'National Government' won 554 out of 615 seats, including 13 former Labour members, 67 former Liberals and 470 Conservatives.
No government since has had as big a winning margin.
