Subject: Is that Latin American music?

There is a strong stereotype about Latin American music. The external world usually thing the music of the region is just some Cuban rythms and Mexican polkas. For instance, not long ago I was in an endless debate with a man that insisted all the Latin music was from Cuba and then from Africa, perhaps confussing the term "Latin rythms" with the Latin American music.

Here I will show you some contemporary Latin American music, that, as you will see, has not much to do with the stereotype. No matter it is still music original and creative, as it is the tradition of the region:

Leon Gieco: Los Salieris de Charly

Leon Gieco: El imbecil

Leon Gieco: La Cigarra

If this thread has some feedback, I promise to continue posting modern Latin American music.

Anyways, if you want to know what is Mexican music today, better listen to Thalia, than to Pedro Infante LOL

And for Argentinean music, this tune is actually part of the "folklore" already. You must listen this: Rata Blanca - Te visitara la muerte (White rat - the death will pay you a visit)

Pseudo-folk imagery may be big in your book Pinguin, but it's just those comfy bourgeois playing proletariat! Chalk it up to Pablo Neruda syndrome...no need to assert that it is a peculiarly Chilean aspect of an overall urban malaise.Evil Smile

Inti-Illimani is authentic...all those MTV clones you put forth are just searching for pesos!

Simply globalism my dear Dr Gonzaga, it is prevalent in all forms of ethnic based music, I've seen such "music" pass of as a fuse of native and modern forms in Balkan musical traditions as well. What can you do...

Inti illimani authentic? Gimme a break.
Inti illimani produced mainly Cuban music, rather than Chilean (they are supposed to be Chileans Confused)
Yes, they produced wonderful Andes music, too.
But believe me, his communist propaganda and admiration of Fidel Castro really disgusted me...

Yes, I rather listen to Leon Gieco.

Are musical contributions to be measured by the lowest possible common denominator as ever paraded by MTV...hoods and jiggling boobs do not music make?

Who are you to "measure" musical contributions?
Why do you assume MTV has anything to do with it, when some of the music exposed is from the 80s and older?

I wonder why, Drgonzaga, you can't keep on focus.

The problem dear Pinguin is that I am spot on and keeping a sharp focus. After all, did you not condemn some rather good music on the basis of somebody's politics? Perhaps you should turn to the musical compositions of Hildegarde of Neff to understand when the voice is actually a musical instrument and forget about all of this pseudo-rap crap copied from the urban jungle! Try watching Glee instead of MTV!

Again, dear Drgonzaga, you don't read well. I don't condemn Inti Illimani because they make Cuban music that you find authentic Confused...  I don't condemn them either if they think Castro is a good buddy.. Confused I simply condemn your idea you have that theirs music is really something authentic while the rest isn't.

Well, that's a matter of taste only. If you like that kind of vocals comming from the U.S. it is your right.

You still don't get the point do you? And as for Inti Illimani playing "Cuban music" you definitely must be smoking more than just Jimmy Hendrix...besides Les Paul played a better "rock" guitar, after all he perfected the damned thing!

I've always liked the Pan Pipe music from South America. It can be lively or relaxing, but it's good imo.

Perhaps you may like this one. An album from Inti-Illimani of 1975 recorded  by them in the exile. It is one of my favorite in Andes music.
