which is the best?  I have been wanting to buy a computer game that is set in space, and am wondering what is the best option.  I've heard that Space Empires and Galactic Civilizations series are some of the best.  Any and all recommendations/opinions will be appreciated.

Sins of a Solar Empire is *the* best space-based RTS.

Trust me on that.

I looked into it, definitely sounds great, thanks rider.Thumbs Up  But, being the cheapskate I am, I was not willing to pay the $20 necessary.  Space Empires V was only $13, so I figure I'll check that out and then look into Sins of a Solar Empire.  (but the main reason being I'm not sure my now 4 1/2 year old laptop could run it smoothly)

Space Empires rocks, but I've only really played SE3. I knew about SE4 but never put in a concerted effort to get it (I would've had to order it online), if there is an SE5, I'm sorely tempted to try it out when I next have time to play a game (like december )

SOASE is really good even on old computers. Some of the updates make it run better as well. This being said, thousands of units that the game has to render sometimes does slow the computer down by a bit.

Master of Orion II. I have wasted far too much of my life playing it.

It's a game with simply such a superb design in gameplay, that even with 15 year old graphics it does not get boring.

Moo2 is great. I never really got into it for some reason though.

Thanks for bumping this thread - it's reminded me to get Space Empires V.

I played the original Master of Orion on my very first computer, which was an ancient machine. All in all that was a very fun game too.

I want to play Mass Effect 2, and will do so soon. Not a strategy game, but it certainly is space based.

My PC isn't the best, so I can't play the newer games like Starcraft and Starcraft 2.  My favourite PC space games are:

Space Invaders - A classic Atari game that is all about space and protecting your ship.  It's in the classic black and green colours and it's a lot of fun to play.

Commander Keen - This game is set in space.  It's a platformer and you have to bounce up and down on your pogo stick to complete the levels.  This game will run from MSDOS.

Asteroids - In this game, you're in a space ship in the middle of the screen and you have a bunch of asteroids flying at you.  You have to shoot at the asteroids to break them up into smaller pieces until you eventually Disintegrate them all.  This game is a nail-biter!

P.S.  Do you like space movies also?  Muppets in Space is worth a watch if you do.  It has Fozzy Bear and Kermit the Frog.

I would have to agree with the above post.  Homeworld 2 is still my go-to game for space combat.  It is a few years old, but nothing I've played imo beats it's space battles.

Nostalgie you bet...

Commodore 64
The most succesfull, best selling personal computer of all times - sold in more than 300 million pieces between 1982 and 1994.

A PC was no match for a C64 in the early to mid 80's - but 5 times more expensive.

It came out in 1990 - but they are still releasing new versions I believe.

I always see middleaged people when they are talking about that Commodor 64 and Amiga. I hate that junks so much! They are even pitier than Celeron 333 computers. At least it doesn't need to write it in all software for installing it. Dead All they leaves to you is just pain of extreme patience. I didn't live in 80s but I hate 80s cars, clothes and most of all that pity hair styles. I hate 90s and first decade of 2000s too... Wait a minute, I don't hate specific things, I just hate everything!

I didn't mean specifically. But regarding to current advancement in medicine, you will probably see your 90s if you are low on alchohol, tobacco, salt and food generally... That would turn 50s to middleages. But that doesn't make you look younger, just keeps you alive longer as an old man. Another reason to die young! Pinch

I don't know when you think the middelages sets in - but it isn't after the 50'es as you say.

The problem is of course, that I build my first computer around the time your parents were born.
(it was based on a Sinclair processor)
