I think the most important meta-event for the Korean War was the UN involvement.

I agree. For the UN to take a stance against China (which was strongly supporting the North Koreans) was in and of itself, a great leap. Isn't it a pity that the UN can't be stirred to take a positive stance on a whole range of other issues?

The problem with the UN is that whilst it serves many useful political and crises management functions, it remains essentially a forum for the security council of powers victorious in WW2 to meet and argue about their often mutually antagonistic policies. The recent trend toward dictatorial politics is a little worrying, especially since Russia has announced development of ballistic arms it really doesn't need and indeed, has opted out of a nuclear treaty in line with Trump's rejection of the same treaty as old fashioned and politically encumbering.

Remember that at the time, Taiwan had China's seat on the security council. Russia walked out, allowing the US, Britain and French to support South Korea. China was a rogue state in turmoil, and the troops that went to North Korea were "volunteers," thus allowing the polite fiction that China was not involved in North Korea (and thus the war shouldn't spread to China).
I think that the UN plays various roles in world politics. It is not as sexy as the Korean War was, but it allows for involvement of everybody, or almost everybody.

That's not quite correct. In the Security Council five countries have a veto power, which, in effect, makes other countries, in certain circumstances, irrelevant. |
