I just bought a new iPhone 3GS, and without applications (add ons) its boring, so i found out that the only safe and official way to get those is through apple online store, which will need credit card number for registration. other ways is through many web sites which offer many programms and applications for the Iphone BUT most of these applications wont work unless i hack my own iphone and break the Apple code or whats called (jail breaking the iPhone).

not sure if this jail breaking is safe or it will cause trouble or i will lose the warranty.

anyone knows if its alright to do so?

if you hack your phone it voids the warranty.  all the apps on my phone were free ones but i cant remember if I needed a credit card to set up the account.

I wouldn't jail break if I was you.  Not only does it anull your warranty but it also means that you won't be able to upgrade the software (e.g. from 3.2.1 -> 3.3)

Alsao, if you're worried about downloading apps from the store on your iphone then you can simply do it through iTunes on your computer, through the app store.  I do it if I am downloadin a very big app.

This is why I hate apple. They're such an uptight defensive company that literally would rather go bankrupt than risk the smallest piece of their IP.

Ditto. This is why I stay away from them.

Get yourself a iTunes voucher and sign up using that. That's what I did. I only ever pay for music from iTunes, all the apps I've got have been free ones :)

Well I have had an apple account and bought tunes for about 3 years now, never a problem.
Apple won't go bust anytime soon.  Just think of all the people who've got iPods and that's only the half of it.  Think of all the people who buy tunes from iTunes.  it's estimated that 67% of revenue comes from sales via iTunes.... that is immense.

The proprietary model is very much to their benefit at this point in time and should that situation change they can relatively easily make their systems and products interoperable.

Well dear Azimuth, first of all I would like to differentiate two things for you:
1) Cracking an iPhone
2) Jailbreaking an iPhone

Both of them are totally different things, if you are under an agreement (like in Dubai I have one with Etisalat who are offering the best Internet service along with lots of other services) with a TeleCom then your warranty will be void if you Crack it.
Now when you sign the contract with TeleComs (Etisalat, AT&T etc) they bound you to use their service for a Year or as agreed and therefore during that time you are not able to use any other SIM in your phone (for example if you travel abroad you will have to get a Roaming plan), now in order to make other SIMs work on your phone, you will have to crack it and that's where the warranty gets void.

Jailbreaking is a totaly different technique where you can restore to normal at anytime by just reinstalling your Operating System.
I have jailbreaked my iPhone (although I am under a contract) but since I am not using any other SIM (meaing that I haven't cracked the phone) I am doing nothing illegal or against the terms of my contract.

Jailbreaking is just a way to fool the monopoly of Apple company and as said you can restore the orignal Apple OS at anytime.

Now if you have bought your iPhone from open market (without any contract) then you should never have any problem to Jailbreak (even if you want to be on the safe side) it.
In case you jailbreak it then let me know I may help you with some great Apps available only for Jailbroken iphones.

My favorite App on iPhone is iBlacklist, which is great if you don't want to get calls from some people you dislike or if you want to only get calls from a specific list of people.

Thanks guys for the help

well what i did (to be in the safe side), i got a new credit card with a about 500 USD limit just for the internet.
made an account with itunes, got many apps, the thing is there are lots of apps to chose from and not much of reviews (in the UAE itunes)
also i found out the UAE itunes in nothing but apps, nothing else, no tv shows, movies or music.
and with UAE credit card i cannot access US itunes

so i might need to get the itunes gift card.
