Chinese history is long and complicated. Maybe it could be easier if we learn it through famous historical figures and their interesting stories:

Why not add some comment of your own about one or more of the Chinese historical figures. One of my favourites is Sun Tzu, a warrior general and philosopher. His writings are still studied today by military historians and senior military people. |

Thanks, that is a very good suggestion. And I like Sun Tzu too, he was a brilliant militarist and a loyal friend.
He was one of the best emperors in Han Dynasty, who was raised up in a prison and then lived in civilians' world. But after he became emperor, he turned out to be a wonderful monarch. The Empire Han reached the peak in his reigning period. Edited by Olivia - 21 Dec 2018 at 11:58 |

Chinese history seems to be so broad and deep(??), it seems like it is hard to get a handle on it.
One way that might be good is who are the intellectuals who dominated, and at what time were the prominent. What is the ebb and flow of taoism, confusianism, buddhism, and of course, Sun Tzu. It doesn't give the history, but it may give a perspective from which the history would be more easily grasped. Sun Tzu says something like the greatest general is the one who doesn't have to fight. Western 'Art of War' treatises assume that if you are reading it, you are already probably past the stage of a stable peace. In the West, the art of war was the stage of maximum involvement and maximum potential cost (or benefit), in other words, when the most is at stake. Plato mentions it in passing in 'the Protagoras' but I also imagine that he would have saved a more involved discussion for an oral discussion.

Some ofwhat you say about this emperor is false. West Han Dynasty reached its peak under the reign of Wu di(Liu Che) instead of Xuan di(Liu Xun). Besides, most Chinese emperor are rather bad and evil.(I am a Chinese).

I think it is very hard for Westerners to grasp anything in Chinese history. Again, I know the vastness of Chinese history overwhelms me. Because of the vastness, I suspect Westerners latch on to figures in history about who they know really very little about. It is easy to get nostalgic about ancient emperors in a place thousands of miles away which they have never seen. Please forgive us westerners if we say something silly. We may have certain views regarding individual representation, and market forces that we assume are true every where and every when.
