I always find it interesting to hear which destinations most interest people, for whatever reason - so I made this thread as an opportunity for everyone to share the country which they most enjoyed, found most interesting.etc, whilst traveling. Essentially, it's up to you to define 'favourite'!

To complement your post, feel free to post some images (remember to reference their source) of particular highlights of your favourite country.

Here's my little contribution:

Mauritius

View from a plane over the Northern tip of the island

Another plane-shot over a recently developed urban promontory

Aerial view of the capital, Port Louis

A market in Quatre Bornes, where my dad was born

From the summit of Le Peuce Mountain

'Pieter Both' Mountain, with its strange boulder sitting on top

Wow, the fabled home of the Dodo bird (who unfortunately are not among us anymore).

I honestly couldn't choose just one, I like so many places. My biggest favourites are Mexico, Spain, Italy and Greece.

Yes, currently I'd have to agree - Greece is my favourite as well. Then again, Turkey doesn't remain far behind. Both are quite good (and similar, in many senses).

I'm not that well travelled really...I suppose the holiday I enjoyed most was Florida, the holiday with the nicest scenery/atmosphere was Portugal (believe it or not!), and the holiday with the best city culture was San Francisco. On top of that, the holiday I had the most fun with new friends was Spain, so as Knights said, it all depends.

I would love to go to Asia though, especially Vietnam and the likes. That is my ambition.

I agree with those of you who said Spain - what I can remember of it is absolutely marvelous, and I'm going back there soon.

Last October my (Somewhat well off) cousin got married in a hilltop village outside Florence called Artimino. Basically for a week we stayed in this resort, high up in the hills overlooking the most beautiful city on the planet! (I think there is little doubt that Florence is the most remarkable city every built, or at least in Europe, that I know of). This was easily the best place I've ever visited, the whole of Tuscany is complete with rolling hills and olive groves. I even muse about someday buying a little house in some isolated rural setting there. Here are a couple of pictures I dug up from Google:

This was the castle in which the reception was held:

Heres a picture of the village main st., with the villa off in the distance:

This should give a general idea of the views (Couldn't get a picture of the spectacular view of Florence)

In no particular order Colombia, Fiji and Mexico.

Colombia for the fabulous geography and warm  people.

Fiji for the warm friendly people and great fishing.

Mexico for the food, the people and the fishing.

For food; Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore.
For the people: Almost everywhere.
For the scenery: Almost anywhere, but Santa Marta, Colombia, the San Blas area of Panama, Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, and the US/Canadian Mountain West are favourites.
Places I'd like to live: Anywhere in the French Pyrenees between Toulouse and Biarritz.
Places I'd like to own a vacation home and the means to get back there regularly: Sanary sur mer, France, the beaches of Uruguay, or Noosa in Queensland.
Favourite cities: Saigon, Montpellier, Mexico City, Seoul, Quebec, and Brisbane.

...i very much enjoyed my visit to Turkey and i had what has been so far, the best day i have ever had while in another country.....Australia takes some beating though...i travelled  around many parts of the country and saw different perspectives....i found  the whole   experience    liberating  having come from stuffy and cramped ol' blighty....however, although i was fairly certain that i would never see such stunning views in any other place, i was amazed some years later to find equally,if not better views right on my doorstep.....in North Wales!!!!!!.....Clap

PS....some parts of rural France were very alluring...

I think we Brits are so obsessed with going away overseas for our holidays that we often miss things in our own country. There are loads of places on this island I have not been, North Wales is among them. It is high on my list of things to see, along with the Orkney Islands.

..i think you are quite right and i think it has something to do with the 'island mentality' and it is nice to escape sometimes!!!...although i have seen a great deal of England, to my shame, i have yet to spend any time in Ireland and Scotland and bearing in mind how easy it is, there really is no excuse (except financial restraints!!)....to be fair though, i have only visited Turkey and Spain for true 'holiday' motives and this can produce a rose-tinted view....however, most the other countries i have visited have been for other reasons (historical, seeing friends and family etc) which has often been better because the touristy aspect is avoided which means i have been a lucky to get a real flavour of the places where i have stayed....

..still, despite 'holidaying' in Turkey, i really did love what i saw and experienced....

..all the best...AoO...

I think it should be Japan. I really like the cherry flowers and the ancient architectures there, full of cultural things.
