The core ongoing competition remains as elucidated in the fine analysis presented below. Questions might be numerous; but more specifically how the traditional west, less the Russians, and the US allow this to be used and or game played to their advantage is a primary one. Self evidence says you back the Indians discreetly (as they have done) and circumvent if not at least slow the agenda of Beijing.....will that continue?
To soon to tell. But they'd be stupid if they didn't.

IMO China and India can no longer be considered chess pieces by Russia and the West. I would hazard to say that China is at least as much of a player as Russia with India not so far behind.   So trying to play these two off against each other is a risky game with much more than pride at stake for any supposed player.

And you would be correct. But how one 'plays' and or manipulates the Indians, not as history has shown in the past as an inferior, is no longer an option. A potential ally and or a neutral vs. an identified foe's relations is a different concept in this new century.  Actually, the same concept different variation on intent, viz markets and resources shifts in balances as much as defensive capabilities. The US and the west have every reason to treat the Indians as equals. Certainly in support of mutual goals.

And it's on that basis, that India becomes a major player recognised and supported because of like commercial and defensive reasons. No doubt you know the 'great game' as an old one.....and time will ever tell. But the Indians have arrived.
