Less than 12 months ago, I read an authoritative article which stated quite categorically that Neanderthals and Modern Humans not only did not but could not have had carnal connection with each other.

New study leaves little room for doubt – Neanderthals and humans interbred

In recent months, numerous DNA studies of ancient humans have all converged on one conclusion – Neanderthals and Homo sapiens interbred.  While for many this may seem unsurprising or even obvious, we must remember that until fairly recently the predominant scientific theory was that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens never came in contact with each other, let alone interbreed.

Now, don't tell me you haven't seen this bloke in your town or on the local bus.

Modern europeans (or those descended from them) have between 1% to 4% neanderthal DNA.This is an accepted value.

Perhaps they should be included into our species?

No argument with that. Just pointing out how quickly the science is overturning previously held "facts".

Fantasus:
Again, no argument from me.

The point I was making is that for some "expert" to claim that there was no sexual connection between Neanderthals and Modern Humans was absolute bollocks. How could anyone have known this? How could they ever prove it?

Now, what's that old saying about screwing good looking rats on the run providing we can keep in step?

As far as I remember did this interbreeding occur before Homo sapiens entered Europe, I think it was before 60ky BP. If we keep in mind, that lions and tigers can interbreed or donkeys and horses, then there is no need to include the Neanderthalians into the modern human species.

Except the offspring in those cases do not breed themselves.

I think there is evidence of interbreeding in Europe, possible in the east. I just can't remember at the moment.

As for including Neanderthals into the AMH species, I agree with you. I misinterpreted what fantasus had written.

So, the offspring of these connections, could they have been the Denisovans?
