Beta testers wanted: Is my webapp too unintuitive? |

For the final project of my Interactive Media degree, I worked on a
website for making discussion more organized. Having graduated, I
decided to take the project forward and make it into a proper working
web application yoomoot. It's now at the stage where it can be tested.
The problem it addresses is the loss of millions of good ideas posted on forums to the oblivion of ten-page-long threads. Standard forum threads don't make good information resources – most people can't be bothered to read more than the first dozen or so posts. The idea with yoomoot is that it makes big discussions more manageable, so that it's much easier to navigate through big discussions and digest them easily. The problem is that you don't really get to see the benefit of this until after the discussion is had. When you're actually having the discussion, the 'yoomoot way' requires you to think carefully about what you're saying, so it's not as intuitive as talking in a normal discussion. I'm concerned that it's actually too unintuitive to get going. Anyway I thought some of you might be interested in testing yoomoot out. Any kind of feedback would be very helpful, even if it's just to give a big ![]() If anyone is interested I would be extremely grateful. Just give me your email address (either by replying here or by emailing me at nicolas <AT> yoomoot <DOT> com ) and I'll send you an invite. |

Caveat: I wouldn't be too quick to click on that link - can anyone QA it as safe?

yoomoot perfectly safe and harmless I promise :)
You can google 'yoomoot' to check its authenticity if you like. For example, I got an article published in TechCrunch: Echo won’t kill comments — they’re already dead |

How does your system make forums more manageable? Could you explain some of the benefits (if any)?

yoomoot discussions have to be worded entirely in questions and answers. So
instead of scrolling through a mess of
undifferentiated text, you just glance through a short list of
questions to find the points that interest you. Additionally, users can
usually edit one another's answers, so instead of having lots of
slightly different answers, you have one combined answer for each point
of view.
It's not the same as standard Q&A forums like Yahoo! Answers and Stack Overflow. Q&A 'Discussions' on those sites consist of one question and a single set of answers. Everything else must be said in standard 'free-form' (i.e. messy) comments. In contrast, yoomoot's unusual interface facilitates a web of interconnected questions. They're the key features. There's a lot more to it than that though. I'm more than happy to explain things in more detail if you're interested. |

Thank you for the explanation cojadate. From what I understand it appears that you have a nifty feature that can be worded as a question (or, as in jeopardy - as answers) in order to find the text of interest. Would you say that our search feature does something similar? My interest only would be in how it fits our forum. In addition we generally do not allow others to edit posts on this forum (when necessary only staff can do that).
Though your system appears interesting I don't think I would be personally interested in it. However, that's not to say other members won't (for their own usage outside of AE). In the mean time why don't you graze around our forums and partake in some All Empires topics while you are here? |

Oh dear I don't think I explained myself too well. It's not really a search tool at all – it's a whole different way of structuring mass conversations.
I do intend to have a look around, and hopefully contribute to, this forum. I was recommended to it by a user on the Civilization Fanatics forum as somewhere where there was high quality of debate. |

Well, the afore-mentioned discussion web-app finally launched: http://yoomoot.com
I'd be very interested to hear what you think of the yoomoot format. Does it make it easier to get an overview of debates? Or is it just confusing?

It requires a plug-in and you know what SANS says about "plug-ins"--
your browser doesn't have the necessary plugin installed. no plugin is required to use yoomoot via Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome NOTE: I have deactivated that link so as to make sure no one "hits" it.

Well it's only Internet Explorer that requires a plug-in. It was a choice between getting yoomoot launched now, even though it doesn't work without-a-plugin for all browsers, or delaying the launch further while we get it working on IE. Eventually it'll work on IE too.
