Fascinating and breathtaking is the only way i can describe this collection of photographs! Came across this from an Australian News website. Here is a sampler




How was it done, is described in the paragraph before scrolling down to the pictures. "Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images." The rest of the pictures are simply stunning!
