Any time now this year, the PLAN is expected to unveil it's latest and much anticipated surface acquisition to it's fleet, "The Shi Lang". The name itself is questionable, but the plans for the ship, not so much!

For the article -

For the artists interpretation after it completes it's modernization -

If sources are correct, then the naming of the carrier lacks any irony or subtlety what so ever. Still, an interesting topic as the analysts in the defense business the world over waits on pins and needles.

Yes, it seems that the name has become another part of the propaganda war concerning Taiwan.

It is interesting that historical figures like Zhen Chenggong and Shi Lang both are considered heros in mainland China, even if Zhen fought on the Ming side and Shi Lang came to end up on the Manchu side and fight against the Ming. One can also note that Zhen Chenggong is a big hero also in Taiwan.

In case anyone missed it. China's first aircraft carrier started sea trials about a week ago. As the video makes clear toward the end, Taiwan is not very happy about it.

I wrote a reply but the page crashed after I pressed send which caused all of it to be lost - and now I'm turning to drugs and alcohol to cope with the disappointment.

Suffice to say, this refitted Russian tub changes very little. I'm not convinced the easy to hit carrier fleets are even the way to go anymore, seeing as they do little more than shorten the runs of fighter and bomber squadrons.

Thailand has an aircraft carrier too.

Taiwan will remain an independent nation so long as the Taiwanese refuse to join the mainland and enjoy the backing of a major power.

Do you mean to imply that Beijing intends to "water hose" Taiwan into submission? Placing aside the historical Ching admiral, Shi Lang, who eliminated the last of the Ming on "Formosa" in the late 17th century, I can not imagine how you can get "water" out of 'wave" and convert the personator into a "hose" unless it is some form of Ukrainian hijinx. There certainly were many of those in the evolution of this strange vessel:
