Titles like this will be one of the reasons why our descendants 300-500 years in the future will consider us "barbarians".

http://money.cnn.com/2012/02/29/technology/apple_market_cap/index.htm

What on earth does that mean? Basically, it means that apple if worth more than the GDP of Poland. However, how raw it sounds...Worth more than Poland, a big country, and its people! I get crazy when I hear such a thing. I remember myself in Sweden a decade ago, sitting on a table with hardcore "socialists" talking about the value of people in money, especially old people. It makes me outrageous! I really wonder how our global society has been ethically undeveloped, something that has allowed us to speak about the value of human beings or even countries in money.

Think a bit out of the box. Imagine yourself being Voltaire or any other gigantic figure in recent history and read out loud for yourself the title of the article. Doesn't it sound really barbaric?

You have the point. A bit off topic but Apple's succes lies at social statue desires of people. Everyone knows that.

What a silly way of judging the worth of something.... It only makes sense if you follow one very questionable measurement.

In 300 years, Poland will probably still be here. Apple will be lucky to survive that long.
Apple will titillate us. Poland will fight wars, sign treaties and educate millions.
Apple is owned by shareholders, and can be dissolved entirely with the stroke of a pen just like the once 'invincible' Standard Oil was. Poland took on the Nazis, the Cold War oppression of the USSR, and she is still with us.

At the heart of the problem is the use of GDP as a measure of wealth. GDP just measures how much money was spent in the country in a given year. It takes no account of even the economic value of what the money was spent on. Nor does it take account at all of existing economic material wealth, let alone non-material wealth.

Moreover the story here ignores the fact that if any of those Apple shareholders actually try to cash in in their holdings, they'll soon find out that they're holding on to fairy gold.

The whole thing is pretty arbitrary anyway, I assume Apple was worth more than, say, Nicaragua last year, and more than Albania last month. But Hold The Press! Apple under a certain measure of GDP has now surpassed a sufficiently well-known and proportioned country, they'll lap this one up!

What an excellent post Constantine!
Just the "educate millions" is worth than anything material on the planet. Also lets add that there are things in Poland that look better than any product Apple will ever produce, whether that is a medieval castle or simply a beautiful waterfall in the Polish forest.

The gross domestic product (GDP) is one the primary indicators used to gauge the health of a country's economy. It represents the total dollar value of all goods and services produced over a specific time period -

It is of course nonsense from just about any point of view. Even Poland would be a company which could be easily evaluated (and ignoring that GDP misses out a lot of things that only the most skilled shady accountant  could hide) they would essentially be comparing Poland's revenue with Apple's market cap. For comparison Appel's revenues are about a fifth of its stock value. Are they supposed to be journalists with economy as specialty?

Which is why it is worthless as a guide to the health of an economy. 'Dollar valuie' is an materially invalid concept, especially in comparing countries with different currencies or countrie at widely different time. For a start it totally ignores the black economy (people who don't report their activities) and the grey economy (people who do things at no charge, like wives looking after children.

Years ago I started paying my wife a salary for driving me around on business whereas she used to do it for free. The UK's GDP went up at that moment by the amount of her salary, thougn no real change had taken place (except my tax liability had changed).

Thank you for bringing that up my applause

I feel like that people have been directed in the past 20 years to belevie in this concept of a "glorious world market with bustling opportunity " but is really happening is that private enterprise is just getting more powerful at the expense of the vast majority's jobs, standard of life, individual  freedom and that of the earth.

Thank you glorious global free market for improving  this world so much.

Thank you for the mid east wars
Thank you for the recession
Thank you for all of the civilian protesters attacked by law enforcement
Thank you for treating humans like mere commodities
Thank you Apple for the 36 hour shifts in China
Thank you Chevron for abusing Nigeria
Thank you Exxon for filling up my television space with those sh*tty "please let us trash" Canada ads
